If the Buddha Were Your Therapist: An Introduction to the Hakomi Method

January 30, 2016 @ 10:00 am - January 31, 2016 @ 4:00 pm

buddhatherapistThis introduction to the Hakomi Method entertains the notion of the influence of Buddhist philosophy and practice in Hakomi.
If the Buddha were your therapist, he might talk with you about:
Mindfulness: Mindfulness is the cornerstone of Buddhist theory and practice and is central to the Hakomi Method. Hakomi has a unique application of Mindfulness which includes not only present moment awareness, but assisted self-study toward habitual physical, emotional and thought processes which usually unconsciously govern our daily experiences. Bringing consciousness to these habits ultimately leads to a path of liberation.
Suffering: Interestingly enough, the first thing the Buddha talked about after sitting under the Bodhi tree in deep meditation, was suffering. He didn’t talk about morality or love or justice. Hakomi helps to help alleviate unnecessary suffering generated from beliefs and patterns from long ago. Hakomi also has some ideas about how to expand the therapist’s range and capacity when it comes to “being with” the suffering of others.
Compassion: Hakomi therapists actively cultivate what we call Loving Presence. This is another principle central to our approach and is a state of consciousness which can deliberately be cultivated and utilized in relationships. Studies show that the state of mind, the attitude of the therapis,t is more important than any particular technique when it comes to change.
Non-violence: This is another of the founding principles of Hakomi. For us it means accepting things as they are rather than trying to force change. We believe in the inherent wisdom of our clients and their feelings. For example, if someone is sad or angry, we don’t try to talk them out of it; rather, we mindfully explore the needs, associations and meanings of those feelings.
Basic goodness: The Buddha believed we are all basically good. In Hakomi we trust in the deep inner wisdom of each human and find that people spontaneously move toward health and resolution when their suffering is held and their needs are acknowledged. For us this impulse toward wholeness is hard wired within the nervous system of our species.
Please join us for this potent exploration of the application of these Buddhist principles in work with clients of all kinds.
